The concept of a bean bag couch is nothing new to the college culture. They have been using them for well....let's say about forty years. The bean bag is a staple piece of furniture that can double as a bed when necessary or when you have partied so much it is safer to stay right where you are, on the couch! As poor college students, a group of kids from one state university started a small business of teaching people how to construct their own furniture including chairs and couches, foot stools and tables, and just about anything else you can imagine.

For those who are not so crafty, there are companies that sell bean bag couches and other related furniture. The selection is wonderful. Colors go on forever, so just pick your favorite. Fabrics are varied as well. Silk, velvet, leather, corduroy, faux fur, cotton, tweed, canvas and many more fabrics are used to make commercial varieties.

Outside liners can be used that allow you to use them in the family room, den or a children's room because the liners make the bean bag couch easier to clean. Many fabric covers can just be thrown in the washer and dried, like any other piece of laundry. Other types of fabric, like faux leather, can simply be wiped off with a bacterial agent and kept sanitary for the kids to use.
Bean bags couches are so popular because they are one of the most comfortable seats you will ever take a rest off your feet on. The really well made ones are soft yet firm enough to give good lumbar support. The couches can be scooted around easily to set in front of the television for viewing movies, sports or whatever else you like to watch.
Tiny little beads of Styrofoam inside the bag will get flat very fast. As college students we found the foam rubber filling was much better and stayed fluffy longer. Manufacturers today use polyurethane foam as the filler inside the bean bag furniture. One of the trade names for this filler is memory foam. It is a little expensive to produce, so the bean bags with this type of filler cost a little more, but they are well worth the few extra dollars. Bags filled with the memory foam are even more comfortable, if one could think that is possible. The support inside the bag from the foam lasts much longer than Styrofoam and is easier to sanitize than the Styrofoam.
Huge fluffy mattresses filled with down are so comfortable you won't ever want to move out of the bed. Bean bag couches are the closest you can come to that down pillow mattress without spending your life savings. They are comfortable, chic and colorful and will fit your décor with a style and flair that will make your gaming space, child's room, or casual living room look like it stepped out of the '60's.
