For some reason, rainy days that restrict children to the house automatically trigger a bad case of the 'I'm bored's.' They don't feel like doing anything in particular, there's nothing on TV, and the computer just isn't that interesting. Instead of dreading these days, use it as an opportunity to introduce the kids to new activities.
Make A Fortress
A dreary drizzly day can be a great reason for a little indoor adventure. Gather the children's furniture, kitchen chairs, sleeping bags, a few blankets, and head for the couch. Using the couch as a starting point, have the kids set the larger chairs in a square pattern to create a space in the center.
Giant Bean Bag Couch
You can place the children's furniture in the center, or lay sleeping bags down to make it into an indoor tent. Throw the blankets over the top of everything and secure them with clothes pins if you need to. If you lay the blankets the right way, it can even have windows and doors to make it even more realistic.
Kids love to build things and make themselves a personal space, but that's just the start of the fun. They can use it to play school or house acting out various scenarios. For others, it could be a giant castle and your kids can be the lords and ladies of the keep. You can prepare little snacks or give them water for a tea set to carry the idea further. The possibilities are endless and guided solely by their imagination.
Crafts And Games
Turn children's furniture such as a table and chairs into a creativity station. Because children's furniture is scaled down to the perfect size, your kids will find it easier and much more comfortable to work off of. Bring out a box of crayons, glue, foam shapes, and some of the recyclables to see what they can create.
Aluminum cans can be covered with paper or fabric and decorated to make a personalized pen holder, or a vase for paper flowers. Empty toilet paper rolls can become anything - from a set of x-ray goggles to the accents on a funny hat or even alien antenna.
Cuddle Up With Board Games, Books, Or Movies
If it has been a long day, you and the kids might be in the mood for nothing more than some relaxing quiet time. Bring out the sleeping bags and a collection of your kids' favorite board games. Sleeping bags also make the perfect environment for a 'sleep over' in front of the TV watching new movies, old ones, or just your favorites. Join the kids on the floor and read them their favorite stories, or even better, introduce them to yours.
Kids are always on the lookout for something new or different, but this doesn't mean it has to be the latest gadget. Children's furniture, sleeping bags, and classic stories give you the opportunity to provide your kids with a new and exciting experience. Instead of dreading rainy days, they will look forward to a day of memories.
